The Basics

Name: Evan Arceneau
Age: Seventeen
Element: Health
Classification: Consular
Birth Kingdom: Unda
Home Kingdom: Ignis

Appearance

Playby: Not as such.
Appearance:
A young man -- really still just a teenager -- Evan hasn't entirely filled out yet. He's short, as men go, and though there still seems to be time for a late growth spurt he probably isn't going to get much taller. He's got a serious, roundish face with thin lips that trend towards frowning, narrow eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes and a nose that's a little big for the rest of him. He's smooth and pale in complexion, lanky in the limbs, and keeps his warm reddish hair cropped too short for fashion. All in all, he mostly just looks young, but given time he'll grow into a soft kind of handsomeness.

He carries himself with casual lack of consideration, his posture mediocre and his expression generally aloof. He pays little attention to what he wears, save for a token attempt to appease his dad, but since his parents still buy his clothes, whatever he wears is of good weave and excellent make.

Personality

Personality:
He is fiercely spoiled, but Evan is not a brat -- not in the classic sense; he may feel entitled to a lot but he's a hard worker and hasn't thrown a tantrum since he was a toddler. He has always been exceptionally skilled at spatial puzzles, logic problems and all manner of brain games and, in his family full of big personalities, he has played those skills up all of his life. He is unusually clever in some very flashy ways, but moreover he really believes that he is one of the smartest people -- maybe the smartest person, period -- in his peer group and he tends to totally disregard people he sees as below his level. He has aimed his sights on becoming one of the country's preeminent engineers and architects, and he has a lot of big ideas on harnessing the raw power of Searik's open lava flows for the city's purposes. He craves power without really understanding that it's power that he craves.

That said, he suffers from a lack of experience. He recognizes this (as much as any teenager can) and has been working actively at trying things out. In light of being forced to acknowledge that the adults of the world know more than he does, he dons humility like someone might don a cowl against the cold and tries to cover up his reflexive arrogance.

His big blind spot is people. He thinks he's reasonably good with people, and while he does glean some small skill by treating human behaviour like a complex puzzle, he really does not understand other human beings on a basic intuitive level. He's an introvert's introvert, too, which just makes things worse given that he finds that being around people too much in a day tires him out. He does have a degree of private contempt for what he sees as the petty machinations of brainless socialites, particularly towards people who remind him of his sister or who he sees as driven purely by emotion.

He's afraid of almost nothing and his interest in the intricacies of the world around him is boundless. He's motivated by learning and he'll take on any situation that he might conceivably gain some psychic benefit from, bolstered by a dangerous mix of confidence in his own competence, and ignorance of the depth of dangers around him. He has a particular weakness for puzzles or mysteries and will eagerly open up to people whose puzzles he can help solve, or with whom he can have (what he sees as) intelligent discourse. He will get bored and anxious and even angry if he's forced to complete tasks that don't challenge him.

Once he's relaxed around a person, he has a snarky, surreptitious and sometimes sharp sense of humour, and a wit given to making obscure jokes. He's not actively mean and can be quite thoughtful, given his attention to detail. He doesn't hold any malice towards other people, even those that he holds in contempt, and is privately a pragmatic optimist. Everyone has their place; his is just at the top.

Likes:

  • Puzzles. This little dude does them for fun, be it one of those little metal spatial things or twisty logic brain games.
  • Learning. He'll latch onto someone like a burr if he thinks they have something of value to teach him. He is actually very driven by this, seeing his ability to learn as one of the really valuable things about himself
  • Power. Though if you asked him he wouldn't list this in his likes. He likes to have power because he thinks he'll be more responsible with it than other people, ha ha.
  • Animals. There have always been a handful of pets around his house, despite the mess they cause, and he finds it much easier and more fun to talk to cats than to people. This is sort of specific to predatory mammals; fish are terrible pets, if you ask him.
  • Excellent Buildings. One of the reasons he'd love to travel is to experience the architecture of far-off places. He sees buildings as the most basic and essential pieces of human artwork.

Dislikes:

  • Socialites. People who devote their lives to social pursuits are vapid, meaningless and false.
  • Being ignored. It specifically drives him up the wall, but he'll act like a cat if people do it and start ignoring them back.
  • Soldiers and the Army. Though his family's fortune was made off of the war, he finds the idea of open warfare crass and unsettling. Soldiers, officers, and those who make their living in the army he sees as socialites driven by power and violence rather than power and adoration.
  • The Rebellion. He sees them as emotionally driven rumour-mongers with all the same problems as the Army. This is a very casual contempt and built mainly upon things he's heard his father say.
  • Lack of Knowledge. When he's thrown into a situation he's not prepared for and has no way of learning on the fly, it's like a nightmare to him. Ignorance makes him feel like he's failed big time, even when it's something small.

Elemental Strengths
  • Academic Healing. The more Evan knows about something, the more confident he is in his ability to make it do what he wants; therefore he studies what texts are available in Ignis upon the workings of the human body, and as he learns more his ability to heal specifically the parts he has studied, increases significantly.
  • Hormonal Influence. Evan has an interest in how emotions have such a drastic effect on people's thoughts and actions, and has learned through study and experimentation to have some small influence in particular on the release of mood-altering hormones and chemicals. He understands that they come from the brain, and if he sets his mind to it he can cause someone to feel a little happier than they might otherwise, or increase feelings of panic or fear. This works best on emotions the person is already feeling.

Elemental Weaknesses
  • Intuitive Healing. He's not so good at 'looking inside' someone and 'seeing dark patches' or anything like that. He might be able to sense when something is wrong with a person, but if he can't figure out what has happened to make it that way he flounders trying to figure out how to fix it.
  • Disease Control. He has little experience with and little skill with the healing or control of infectious diseases. If someone has a cold, he can alleviate symptoms, but they're on their own in regards to getting over it.

Background

Family:
Mother - Kay Arceneau (nee Gray), Fire Master, 45
Father - Aaron Arceneau, Time Consular, 45
Siblings - Cassandra Arceneau, Fire Citizen, 21

History:
The youngest of two, Evan was born abroad to a very cunning merchant living in Unda and a younger daughter of the Gray family of Searik. His family moved back to his mother's birthplace of Searik before he was old enough to have any recollection of his life outside of Ignis, and they promptly got fat and wealthy -- wealthier -- off of his father's well-timed entry into the weapons market. His family has benefitted greatly and suffered almost no hurts from the war, and so Evan tends to downplay and underestimate the effect that the war has had on his country and the rest of the world. He does have an interest in travelling, and an interest in visiting his Undan birthplace specifically, though at the moment it's the idle, abstract interest of youth.

From a young age he has had his moody, socialite, spaz of a sister to look up to and subsequently use as a negative example. He applied himself to school early and thoroughly and has therefore excelled at anything academic he's set his mind to, to the point of leaving friends and classmates way behind in his dust. That kind of preeminence extended as much to his elemental pursuits as it ever did to his academics, as well -- he has studied long and hard to be as adept as he is with his Health skills, taking an intellectual path towards proficiency moreso than one based on willpower or mysticism, and given that he's seventeen and an accredited Consular, he is inclined to think that his is the best way to do things. In any case, this kind of social isolation via excellence was something his parents encouraged fiercely and as such, Evan's managed to develop a pretty deep-seated superiority complex.

His life has been unremarkable, save the fairly regular but ultimately meaningless series of awards from school for academic achievement. He hasn't had a chance to do anything dramatic given that he's spent most of his days studying, learning, playing with problems and solutions. He has spent some summers abroad in the larger northern island of Ignis and though he took advantage of those brief, sunny stretches to experience the outdoors, he's never much developed a habit of getting outside the city.

Most of the conflict in his life comes from his sister, Cassie. Four years his senior, she's a thorn in his side and she loves it. He likes a quiet lifestyle and she prefers to fill all the hours of the day with people, and though their parents' house is large somehow she always manages to get in his space and under his skin. She is even more frustrating in that she is genuinely very smart about people, an area that Evan senses -- if not admits -- that he's weak in. Evan would say that he generally loves his family, but Cassie pushes her luck on a regular basis.

Evan has recently graduated from his run in the best private schools that the Ignisian schooling system offers, and is looking to take the next step towards his goals: interning with one of the city's architects, preferably one that has some pull. He hasn't found one that will take him on yet, but he's only just started his search.

Quote :
"Honestly," Kay was explaining, exasperated and gesticulating, "shit ass luck. I mean there's not a ton I can do, at least about your stuff --" she shot Aaron an apologetic look, "not yet, but I had hoped in the meantime to figure out at least why this was happening."

She was sitting alongside the bed that Aaron still had staked out in the VIP section of Joey's spa, frowning fiercely enough that now and then she showed teeth. It wasn't that Aaron was up and about yet, as such, but she felt an obligation to keep him in the loop. He was safe here, yes, but... well, it hadn't been hard to read him when she'd let him know that some of his equipment was missing. She'd gotten a bead on where it was being kept, generally, but hadn't worked out a plan to steal it back yet. There were other challenges, too -- what to do with the small horde of computers and more esoteric technology once she'd retrieved it. She had an inkling to put it in the dragon kids' guard if she got it back, under threat of a serious scale-singeing if Nakana tried any of her techno-curious tricks on it. Allayn might do as a guardian. He was responsible, and yet, all of that was moot until she got it back. She'd at least had time to suss out that security cameras watched the evidence vault in which it was kept, inside and out.

That wasn't even to speak of her dismal failures in sussing out the who's and the whys of their little forest encounter. Vinar was in none of the haunts she'd remembered him lurking in, and the Orphaners were keeping a low profile, although she'd been keeping an eye on their HQ. Astren hadn't noticed any activity, but her nose was to the grindstone. Kay had just started casting her own net looking for other elementals, and had had little progress on that admittedly shaky front. It had been a long week so far.

Once Aaron had been taken down off of the painkillers to a dosage where he was coherent enough to talk, Kay'd made a point of trying to visit regularly. Of course, so far these had been frustrating and only served to remind her and him both of how sideways things had gone, but she'd felt a kind of obligation. No, not even quite that -- she'd remembered how casually he'd reached for her when she'd gone to leave the first time she'd visited, and it had been on her mind.

As much as it kept her visiting, his casual gesture of affection made her nervous, too, when she stopped to think about it. She shied away from thinking too much about that on top of everything else, but at the same time that offhand gesture compelled her to react in some way.

The upshot was that, here she was, trying not to reveal just how dismally she'd managed to fail the investigation so far, to the guy she'd managed to get tangled up in this shitty mess. "Skye might have some leads. I'm gonna talk to her tonight when she gets back in with the party-bus."
Recycled sample from private RP; for the interested, this Aaron and Kay are from a different universe.
