The Basics

Name: Nam Sung
Age: 11
Element: Earth
Classification: Citizen
Birth Kingdom: Terra
Home Kingdom: Ignis

Appearance

Nam Sung A_girl_and_her_goat_by_thewickedkid-d5u1i0r
Playby: N/A
Appearance:
Height: 4'2"
Weight: 55 lb

Personality

Personality:
Small, and meek, now matter what way you look at her, Nam's eyes are usually fixed on the floor. She keeps her head down and her stance closed, trying to make herself as small as possible. The less attention she receives, the more comfortable she feels. She's always trying to think of ways to escape, although most of them are childish and completely unrealistic. (Example: Riding a dragon out of Ignis and torching everyone in her path, giant gophers popping out of the ground and leaving her an escape tunnel, etc...)

In some ways, she's surprisingly grown-up, able to appear placid even under unsavory circumstances. Even when she's scared, or being screamed at, she can keep a straight face and avert her gaze meekly, even when she wants to scream right back. In other ways, her growth has been stunted, and she acts like a child half her age. She'll constantly fantasize, imagining trees whistling low tunes, animals talking to one another when they meet, and any number of nonsense explanations or fairy tales to explain why she was slow doing a particular task. It's one of the few things that hasn't been effectively beaten out of her, and she clings to them despite everything.

She has a hard time speaking coherently, often stammering and stuttering, especially when she speaks to adults. She tries to keep her speech short, and curt to hide this, but will lapse if she's been dragged out of a particularly amusing or terrifying fantasy. Her stammer will also break when she shares her fantasies, but returns if she feels she isn't supposed to be talking. She mentally kicks herself when she disrupts her quiet reservation, but only because she's afraid of being in trouble.

Though Nam is usually able to appear calm under distress, there are subtle clues leading up to an outburst. Her stammer worsens, her lips quiver, her toes curl and unfurl repeatedly, and her hands and facial muscles will twitch. When she finally does break down in anger, fear, or crushing woe, she can be uncharacteristically loud, her speech impediments break, and she can remain this way for hours on end until something either calms her down, knocks her out, or leaves her alone until she's certain no one can hear her.
Likes:

  • Small Fluffy Critters - If it's small enough for Nam to step over, or lift up, chances are she thinks it's adorable. She'll watch mice and squirrels fidget until they leave, or at least she will if she can.
  • Music - Nam doesn't have much understanding of music, but she enjoys hearing it. From simple humming and whistling to complicated pieces on a lute or piano, she'll listen intently, sometimes following along with humming or (attempted) whistling of her own.
  • Imagination - As she has little else to hold onto, Nam will often sink into fantasy worlds. And even if they're terrifying, such as monstrous shadows across the wall, or the deep rumble of thunder being a cruel spirit's laughter, she usually prefers them to reality. If she can find someone to "invent" the world with her, she gets excited.
  • Storybooks - For reasons much like her fondness for imagination and imaginative people, Nam appreciates the tall tales of others. While not an avid reader (enslavement sort of impeded her access to books), she clings to the books that she can find.

Dislikes:

  • Boats - Suffice to say Nam has some terrible memories of boats, particularly when she was led onto one by a stranger and taken far away from her home, and her parents, then sold into slavery. The very idea that she would have to take a boat to return to Terra makes her nauseous.
  • Ignis - It isn't where she was born, and she doesn't blend with the rest of the population. She feels like she isn't supposed to be in Ignis by the looks that people give her, and would gladly return home if turned loose.
  • Adults - She greatly distrusts adults in general, making rare exceptions for people who go beyond her expectations. She expects that most adults will at best be dismissive of her, and at worst be violent towards her. She will very rarely look someone much older than her in the eye, and she will very rarely break her reticence to speak with one for more than a few moments. She will attempt to put this aside if she's without alternatives, but will still hesitate, and stammer. (Note: Young adults and teenagers don't intimidate her as much, although she's still hesitant to approach them.)
  • Touching - Because she distrusts people, she doesn't like them touching her. She stiffens if someone brushes against her, or taps her on the shoulder, and squirms and wriggles away when people grab her or hug her.

Elemental Strengths
  • Although Nam has no real comprehension of her element (aside from: "Look! This is a rock!"), when she's intensely frightened or angry, she can unconsciously cause the ground around her to crackle and pulsate, potentially causing attackers to misstep on the trembling earth, or step on a particularly pointy pebble.

Elemental Weaknesses
  • Literally everything. She is ELEVEN. What do you want from her? She has no conscious control over her element whatsoever. When she does cause the ground to shake, she's about as likely to fall over as anyone else. The shaking itself is fairly weak. As it stands, she also has to be in direct contact with the ground for it to react to her.
  • Her element only activates when she is extremely emotional, and due to her affect, or lackthereof, these moments are very rare.

Background

Family:
Mother - Pak Sung | Plant Consular | Age 36
Father - Hai Sung | Earth Apprentice | Age 32

History:
Hai Sung would have been fighting in the war with Ignis, had he not had a pregnant wife and soon a very young child to care for. When Nam was very young, she noticed that people treated Hai differently than he treated them, with a bitter resentment and a cold standoffishness. They didn't seem to extend the same hostilities to her mother, however, so Nam began to wonder why that was. She didn't understand that it was more of an expectation for able-bodied young men to fight and protect their countries than it was for women, and she could find no particular reason. So she imagined a demon that stalked his shadow, terrifying villagers without Hai ever knowing why. When she explained this to her father, he laughed, and played along, claiming that his was the demon that frightened away the demon in Pak's shadow, and if he had left to fight in the war, it could rise up in the evening and swallow her whole. Nam came to realize that this was not true, as she grew a little older, but she pretended that it was true, and explained it to all of the ladies in the market, and the old men on the roads.

Their family was not poor, but not middle class either. They got a little more than by, and were able to educate their only daughter to an extent. Nam did not have much interest in her own schooling, far preferring her intense daydreams to anything that was real in the world. She was not studious, but reluctant, and learned basic mathematics and how to read and write both Terran and Caristan. When she could, she played with other children, but quite a few of them thought her strange for always conjuring fantastical creatures, even during simple ball games. Her town, Seung, was mostly untouched by the war, save for many men and women being absent to fight it (and a sizable number never returning).

When the war ended, and news spread to Seung of the damage done, and the losses, Nam didn't quite understand. Her parents wept, her father cursed himself for not leaving to fight - "As though you'd have made a difference," Pak had snapped - her mother cursed the Ignesian army for what they had done. Arguments ensued without Nam's knowledge - Pak wanted to enlist to help restore the land bridge, but Hai insisted that she was needed to care for Nam - and the older children went solemn, no longer willing to play with her, or anyone else. Many of them had lost older siblings, or parents, or uncles. They were fortunate to live on the north-western end of Terra, where the war had not quite reached, and Pak even explained this to Nam.

One of Hai's friends had died in the war, and although Nam had never met the man, she was brought to the coast to see his funeral. Her parents wore neutral colors, and dressed her the same way, and they led her up to the casket. Her father insisted on opening it up, and Nam saw that he was badly burnt, and hardly recognizable as a human. Pak scolded Hai for allowing Nam to see something so gruesome, and Hai shouted right back that she should see the danger the Ignesians posed. Her parents began to argue quietly, hissing back and forth to one another, and Nam didn't try to intervene. Instead, she slipped away from the funeral, and began to wander the village's empty roads in the dark. It did not take long for her to get lost, and to comfort herself, she imagined that she had not taken a wrong turn, but the road had come alive and twisted to lead her away from the village. Lost and trying not to cry, she strayed off of the road and instead followed along the coast, hoping she would be able to follow it back to the village and get help finding her parents. She did not have to wander for long before she saw a ship not far off the coast. She shouted, and waved, until she got someone's attention, and a sailor came to shore in a lifeboat. She explained her situation, that she had gotten lost and needed to get back to the village where her parents were, and the sailor offered to take her in the boat, as they would be docking there anyway. Nam thanked him, and was led away.

Once she reached the ship, however, things were not as she had expected. The ship did not head north towards the little village where Hai and Pak most certainly were, but instead south, and out to sea. She was thrown into the ship's hold with dozens of men, women, and children alike, many badly beaten, or ill, others tied to supports or metal grates. She too was eventually tied down, and by the time they reached their destination, she had retreated into a fantasy world where things were not so bleak. She babbled incoherently as she was dragged out of the hold, attempting to relay the tales she'd invented, and was struck repeatedly until she curbed her tongue and kept her thoughts to herself. She was introduced to Ignis as a slave, and was quickly sold off.

The woman who bought her, Roslyn Wein, lived somewhat removed from the towns and cities of Ignis, making it possible to keep slaves without being discovered. She went to the cities on occasion, but only rarely, and often she left in the evenings and returned in the mornings, sometimes with jewelry she hadn't had before or flowers. (If Nam were old enough to understand the concept of a mistress, she may have figured that out as the few older slaves in Roslyn's employ had. To put it bluntly, Roslyn was receiving likely-embezzled funds from a dishonest banker.) Generally Nam was a house slave, sent to sweep the floors and wash the dishes. Nam was rarely asked to do physically taxing labor, aside from carrying large stacks of dishes, or tugging the goat from its pen to the barn to its pen again, but Roslyn was demanding. It did not take Nam long to decide that she hated it there, and in Ignis in general. Even the other slaves, of which there were three, were mostly indifferent to her arrival or existence.

Several times, Nam attempted to escape, either running off into the prairie and inevitably leaving a trail of broken twigs and bent grass, or bolting into the forest, quickly becoming frightened and returning. Each time she was returned to her master's - she hated that word - home, deprived of a meal or two or three, and forced back to work. When guests came, she was usually sent away and told to stay quiet, which of course was her favorite time to scout escape routes. If she was careful, she could slip back into her cellar (which she called a burrow) before anyone noticed she was gone. During one such instance, she was caught sneaking back into her burrow. Roslyn was furious, and threatened to burn the bottoms of Nam's feet. The other few slaves didn't come to her aid, terrified for themselves, and Nam found herself overwhelmed by terror. She snapped, and screamed right back at Roslyn, the earth around her shaking, and little pebbles flying up around her, startling the woman. It was very unusual for anyone her age to have control over a system, though Nam was acting entirely on instinct and too terrified to care. Roslyn shot sparks at Nam until she retreated back into the burrow, and the other slaves were forced to calm her down before she weakened the cellar's supports.

Without her knowledge, Roslyn debated what to do with her, be it selling her off again or putting her down like a dog. The older of the slaves, another Terran named Ken, was privy to this, and advised her to either make herself useful or successfully escape. Nam was not sure how this was possible, since it seemed she could do no right (and when it came to pleasing her master, she didn't really want to). She became very meek, and even obedient, in hopes that Roslyn wouldn't kill her, or send her someplace worse than where she already was.

Though the threat still hung overhead, Nam was not sold off, nor killed. She continued to work for her master, loathing every minute of it but staying silent. She began to dream about escaping in fantastical ways that would scar the landscape yet leave her a clear trail home, and for the most part kept these dreams to herself. She took Ken's advice to heart in that the next time she attempted escape, she succeeded. The next time she ran away, she stowed a small bag of bread under her skirt, and kept moving even though it was dark and the woods were imposing.

Eventually she found a trail that led away from Roslyn's home, and she took it, left to find her way home...across an ocean, during political turmoil*, and with a nauseating fear of strange adults and boats. Yippee.

*Aside from the fact that Ignis and Terra were at war, Nam is pretty blind to the situation.

RP Sample:
There was a crust of dirt and soil on Nam's feet, and they were bruised and sore from walking so far. Her hands were sore from clutching the bag of bread for so long. Her butt was sore from when she'd just plopped down on a large boulder. And, for the first time in quite a while, she was pleased with herself. She had made it through a terrifying forest, no doubt filled with large, scary creatures. She was proud to say that she had seen the forest's king - a large stag with impressive crown of antlers.

She smiled softly. Nam knew that wasn't true, but it was how she liked to imagine it: a creature crowned with branch-like horns ruling over a forest, and wishing her on her way with that brief stare and intrigued sniff. Her mother, she thought, would have liked it as well.

She stopped to massage her feet, hoping to still the throbbing and speed her recovery. Even though she had run so far, she felt like if she stayed still for too long, Roslyn herself would catch up, brandishing flames in her hands like daggers, and fire in her eyes as well. When she tried to stand, her legs felt weak, and tired.

Just a bit further, she thought, pushing onwards. It was dark, and maybe if she could find a good hiding place it would be alright for her to settle down.

She stiffened when she heard footsteps, and began to speed up herself. She tried to remember that Roslyn would have been screaming already, but her fear didn't abate. She began to tremble, her heart began to pound, and then the uninterested passerby walked past her as though he had not seen her at all. Nam watched his feet. If she asked him, she thought, maybe he would be able to help her.

She began to creep after him, unconsciously matching his steps. When she wondered if he would be upset by her following him, she tried to justify herself. They were going in the same direction already, after all. She continued to dog his steps, staring at his feet. She tried to work up the courage to ask for help - Just say 'excuse me' - or even get his attention, but her voice caught in her throat, and all that came out was a thin, guttural sound.

She became suddenly aware of how much her feet were hurting - she had to sit down but at the same time she had to keep up with this man. She tried again. "Excu-" her voice hitched again and she stopped. The man kept walking. Maybe he didn't hear her. She hopped a few steps forward, nearly stumbling on the last. "M-mister?"

He turned around. She still stared at his feet, unable to face him directly.

"Kid?"

All she had to do was ask him for help to the next city, for a way home to Terra, for an escape from Ignis. She opened her mouth and tried to speak, but couldn't fully form the words she wanted. Maybe he would be concerned, she thought, but instead he turned back around and continued walking, muttering something in Ignese that Nam couldn't quite understand. She rubbed her eyes to hold back tears and sat down on the road, watching as the man and his worn boots faded into the distance.
