The Basics

Name: Kelly Gray
Alias: Gray Wolf
Age: 41
Element: Ice
Classification: Apprentice
Birth Kingdom: Ignis
Home Kingdom: Ignis

Appearance

Playby: Timothy Olyphant

Appearance: Upon an initial approach, what most people tend to see first are Kelly's piercing steel blue eyes. The eyes themselves are a beautiful coloring and seem to represent purity unknown to most, but the soul searing gaze that Kelly wields turns that purity into a weapon against lies and deception. What once was the innocence of a child viewing the world without boundaries has been focused into a stare that sees the boundaries between lies and the truth.

If one can survive the onslaught of his gaze should he use it, one will see a tall man (6’1”) physically in his prime (167lbs.) through years of training who, despite his rising age, seems to be quicker and sharper than those around him. The salt and pepper hair and scruff that adorn Kelly’s head and his sometimes weary facial expression can betray the substantial amount of slender muscular definition hidden under his clothing. If his eyes weren’t enough to deter some people, his body language is usually enough to give off the vibe that he is extremely comfortable and capable of handling just about any situation that comes his way.

Personality

Personality: Kelly is often misunderstood either by his looks, his profession or his heritage, and sometimes that’s because Kelly wants people to get the wrong idea. On the surface, Kelly exudes a general badassness that is required for his profession of agent within the Ignis military; someone that specializes in doing what most people cannot or could not. Showing weakness or vulnerability can be instantly recognized by those he deals with which could undermine Kelly’s ability to perform his job. This is not to say that Kelly is an icy bastard—he dabbles in sarcasm and charming smiles when he can—but his survivability would be extremely low if he didn’t act like he could kick in the teeth of the biggest guy at the tavern. He’ll also be your best friend if he thinks that will get him what he needs.

If one is able to chip away at Kelly’s frozen exterior, one would realize that he is a fair person. Sure, he might act like a badass when necessary but he chooses his moments to do so and leaves the rest to fair judgment based on his own moral compass. This moral compass that guides Kelly might not match up entirely with the laws of the Ignis government, but he does try to walk a fine line between the two when situations aren’t so black and white. Most times when Kelly is being fair to others, they may not sense it because it is cleverly veiled as something else. For example, Kelly would see a man beating a woman in an alleyway and decide to intervene. The chivalrous man would proclaim his intentions and rush in to stop the man. Kelly, on the other hand, insults the man so that he becomes the center of attention, quickly dispatching an abusive drunkard. When the woman would come to thank him, Kelly would insult her as well and walk away, as if never having the intent to save her.

Ultimately, people who come to know Kelly understand that he’s a good person with good intentions. He may not always make those good intentions known or very clear, but if one can look past the fact that he’s acting like a dick, one will see that he actually being a decent person.

Likes:

  • Alcohol: Alcohol is nice…especially the stuff that you have to swallow fast so it only burns your stomach and not your throat. Not that alcohol affects Kelly as much as it does others—his father was an alcoholic so it seems he was able to gain a higher tolerance to spirits.
  • Children: Not that he would admit it to anyone, but Kelly enjoys children; something about the innocence that they radiate and their carefree attitudes. It gives him hope for the future and that not everyone starts out a criminal.
  • Reading: Kelly could not read for a large portion of his life—there was no need for it when he was involved in the family business. Since joining the military, he was able to teach himself how to read along with a little help from a few other officers and eventually reading became one of his favorite things to do in his downtime.
  • Sarcasm: Kelly is usually serious about his business but he does enjoy a good back-and-forth with someone who can sling some sarcasm, even if it is a criminal that he is hunting down—it’s one of the main qualities he looks for in a woman.
  • Honesty: Kelly doesn’t always have the luxury of telling the truth—he is sometimes forced to string up half-truths and straight-up lies to work his job properly—but he respects those who are honest. Often times, those who are honest to him he tends to be more lenient with or treat with more respect…unless of course the person is being honest about killing or injuring him.
  • Honor: Kelly believes in rules, whether they be the laws of the land or just general common sense. For example, if he comes to a man’s house to arrest him for whatever reason, he will allow him to say goodbye to his family in private. Should that man try to make a run for it, said honor would be forfeit. While he’s honorable man, he does have limits to his honor and should someone betray his honor, they will not receive any leniency.
  • Sex: There’s nothing much to say here. For Kelly, sex is a momentary reprieve from the complications of life where he only has to focus on one thing. In secret though, he is a fan of cuddling--it's the closest thing he gets to a relationship.

Dislikes:

  • His Family: The Grays are a well-known family organization that is usually breaking the law one way or another. Being an officer of the law, Kelly has a dislike for his family members that engage in illegal and oftentimes stupid behaviors. Grays do not kill each other though, regardless of the situation, which is why Kelly is a necessary asset for attempting to stop or hinder the illegal efforts of the Gray family.
  • Unnecessary Violence: Whether it be a husband beating a wife or a father beating a child or a person taking pleasure injuring another person, Kelly is against it; he’s the sort of person to cause the least amount of violence with the most amount success on completing his goals.
  • Power: Kelly has seen good men succumb to positions of power, much like good men succumbing to drinking alcohol; at first it’s no big deal, but then it becomes hard to stop. While Kelly is in a position of power himself, he tries to realize that he is only a few life choices away from being on the other side of the arrest.
  • Relationships: Not that Kelly has time for a decent relationship anyway, but just the attachment makes him feel as though he’s going to give someone a way to get at him. That and he does not want to be perceived as weak in public by showing affection nor does he want a submissive woman to be following him around.
  • Claustrophobia: If there is one thing that will break Kelly’s cool, it is being tucked into a small dark place that isn’t a vagina. Something irrational grows within him and he will begin to start kicking and yelling to be released. It’s one of the few things that he fears in this world.
  • Losing Control: Kelly’s cool and calm demeanor is only possible through years and years of practice. Sometimes he may look as smooth and cool as ice on the surface but on the inside, he could be raging like a volcano. He attributes his anger to his mother’s own temper as she used to lash out at him and his father, sometimes for no reason at all.
  • Being Alone: It is an interesting catch-22 that Kelly finds himself in—he doesn’t like relationships but he doesn’t like being alone either. That’s not to say that he can’t enjoy himself while being alone, but he usually enjoys mingling with others or at least being in the company of others.
  • Rodents: Kelly absolutely despises rodents, whether they are flying or crawling. He gets a chill up his spine when they are near and would frantically slash at the air if one was on him, similar to someone fighting off a bee.

Elemental Strengths
  • When Kelly wields his element, it is usually in a very fine and focused manner, able to produce effects that require a great amount of control. For instance, if fighting an opponent in melee combat, he'll sometimes cause the sheath of the enemy's weapon to freeze to the blade, thus making it nearly impossible to draw out the blade properly and giving Kelly a fraction of a moment to end the fight quickly. This fine control comes from a deeper understanding of what ice is and how to draw upon it.

  • Weaken Objects – Kelly is able to freeze an object or area (part of a wall, for instance) for the purposes of making the object or area weaker, thus decreasing its resistance to physical damage. There is little physical evidence on the affected object or area as some might wrongly assume this ability is simply coating something in ice and breaking it—the process is far more delicate. The smaller the object or area, the more fragile it can become.
    • This technique can be applied to organic matter, although the effects against simple and complex living matter are very different. For instance, a plant might fall prey to the same effects as a nonorganic object, becoming brittle and possibly even cracking at the slightest touch. More complex organics, like a person, would not become brittle but would be affected negatively—like holding onto a piece of ice for too long.

  • Thermal Resistance – Kelly is able to envelope either himself or a small area in an aura of moisture ranging from cool to freezing temperatures. This aura grants him a resistance in regard to heat and flames while it is active.

Elemental Weaknesses
  • Kelly’s ability to finely control his element also ends up being his weakness--while his focus his needle thin, his ability to draw on the raw powers of the element dwindle. For instance, Kelly might have the ability to subtly adjust his environment using his element, but he wouldn't have the clout to cause any massive damage or make environmental changes on a grand scale.

  • Weakening an object using ice has a few drawbacks:
    • Clout – This technique is not one that can freeze an entire wall and have it crumble at the slightest touch—it is more focused and refined. The trade off of that focus comes at the price of performing it in large quantities. In the example above, Kelly could freeze a small part of a wall and have it crumble from a strong push, but freezing an entire wall would not decrease the durability noticeably.
    • Organics – Freezing inorganic materials is quicker and more potent. Even freezing simple organic materials doesn’t pose that big of a problem. Complex organic materials, like the human body for example, don't necessarily freeze and become brittle like inorganic and simple organic material, making this technique less effective on people.

  • Kelly’s ability to generate an aura of cold around himself comes with its own set of issues:
    • Duration – While cloaking himself in an aura of cold moisture seems like a good idea, the energy required to continuously do so is exhausting. This is not the type of ability to be used over long periods of time but rather for short spans so that Kelly does not become engulfed in flames.
Range and Power – While cloaking himself in an aura of cold moisture, the power of this technique is decreased when the range is amplified. For example, Kelly could create freezing temperatures around himself that can defend from flames, but to extend this cloak to envelope others to protect them as well? An entire room with this ability might feel colder and be more dense with cool moisture, but it’s not going to stop that much heat or any sort of fire for that matter.
    • Moisture – In dry climates, Kelly would find this technique harder to execute, if at all, with little to no moisture in the air.

History: Even before Kelly was born, he was already branded by those around him as a criminal. The Gray family initially started out as a small rebellion against the Ignis government; they felt as though the government was not doing enough for its people so a few took matters into their own hands and decided to do something about it. Word began to spread and the Grays became something of a Robin Hood story, stealing from those who had too much to give to those who had very little; it was a type of forced wealth redistribution. Over the years, however, the true intent of the Gray family became lost and future generations twisted the family’s purposes to be more of a crime organization. Still, the lasting impression on some people was that the Grays were the outlaws that people loved.

The Gray reputation is what drew Mary, Kelly’s mother, into a relationship with Paul, Kelly’s father. Mary was younger and a bit of a rebel in her own small world and Paul was a Gray who was just carving out a name for himself in the world. When the two first met, it was a romance that people desired; a romance that birthed Kelly into the world. But soon after Kelly’s birth, Mary and Paul started to become different people. While Mary wanted to become more entangled in the Gray family, Paul had realized that he wasn’t cut out for the life of a criminal; seeing his son and wanting to be a responsible parent changed him forever. Eventually Paul moved his family to an island with little interaction with the Gray family under the guise of setting up his own Gray business; this is what lured Mary to the remote location in the first place.

Eventually Mary realized that Paul was alienating himself further and further from his own family, when all she wanted to do was become a part of it. Kelly, a young boy, always felt torn between his parents; one would tell him that the Gray family was everything, while the other wanted a different life for Kelly—a better life. A life without crime. Paul could not shield his son from the family forever, and over time Kelly began working for the family in small and subtle ways. For one job, he would take a letter from the Gray family to a shop owner, threatening to burn the place down if taxes were not paid. Kelly didn’t realize what was happening; he just wanted to make his family happy.

Kelly’s parents became more and more polarized of each other, with Mary screaming at Paul and leaving for long periods at a time while Paul would just drink himself into a stupor to numb the pain. Whenever Paul could, he sat with Kelly and always taught him stories about right and wrong, knowing that he wouldn’t be there to protect his son from his own family and hoping that his son would make the right choice in the end. Kelly was mad at his father at first because he couldn’t understand why Paul didn’t want to visit his brothers and sisters, not understanding that these family members that were nice to him could be so mean to others. This caused Paul to drink more, becoming effectively useless to anyone.

As Kelly became a teen, however, he began resenting his mother more; sure, she was nice when they were together, but his father was left to his own devices while his mother became closer and closer to the Gray family. On one job, Kelly even saw Mary being very intimate with a man named Caleb, an associate and friend of the Gray family. Seeing such an exchange, Kelly was confused and angry, approaching his mother about what he had just seen. Mary began spewing all sorts of hate for Kelly’s father, calling him less a man than Caleb. In truth, the family saw Caleb as more of a Gray than they did Paul, but ties were so strong in the Gray family that if Paul ever wanted to come back, he would be accepted with arms wide.

Unfortunately, Paul was found dead a few months after Kelly had caught his mother cheating on his father. He had taken in far too much alcohol and attempted to swim in the ocean, drowning himself. The family tried to keep this news from Kelly but he found out eventually, lashing out at them and his mother as the ones would ultimately killed his father. That’s when Kelly began to see the true form of his family—as if the veil was removed from his eyes, he saw the illegal activities, the pain, the greed, and the lies. Perhaps Kelly had always seen this but it was just now registering with the death of his father. With this new information, Kelly began distancing himself from the family, which came at a price; without the protection of the Gray family, he was quickly snatched up by the Ignis government and brought in for questioning.

What the Ignis government was not expecting was this teenager to know and tell of the inner workings of the Gray family. With the death of his father fresh in his mind, Kelly began ratting out his family about the jobs that he worked, the members of the family that did what, and other useful information. While not gone, the Gray family was crippled for a short while, allowing the current government to become more popular with the people for striking such a blow against one of the largest crime organizations on Ignis. Initially Kelly was seen as a prisoner but he became so useful that he was eventually enlisted as a probationary soldier, specializing in anything related to the Gray family.

As the years passed and Kelly became a veteran for the Ignis military, the higher ups had seen his true potential. Despite the many roadblocks that come with being connected to a major crime organization, Kelly climbed up in the ranks of the military until earning himself a spot as something of a government agent or an inquisitor. His missions were related to intelligence gathering, which played a huge part in the war with the Terrans. While there were still those that did not trust Kelly because of his family, there were few who deny his skills and abilities as an agent.

Unfortunately for the Ignis government, Kelly’s ability to get to the truth of the matter has led him to pursue a rumor about the government itself having some involvement in starting the war with the Terrans. His current duties are to locate rebels, question them and bring them in, but he’s been hearing stories—stories that make him question what really happened. He’s not foolish enough to believe everything that he hears, but he’s foolish enough to write everything off that a rebel says as lies.

OOC

RP Sample: “So, let me get this straight…”

Kelly had been sitting forward in his chair, to which he changed positions by leaning back and slightly slouching as he recapped what he had been told. The room that he was sitting in was a smaller room within a tavern—not very expensive to rent per night, but the roof was leak-free and the establishment itself was relatively clean. A candle sitting on the side of the room illuminated the right side of Kelly’s face while the man sitting in the chair directly in front of him—bound to the piece of furniture—had the left side of his face lit up. The cold sweat that visibly sat upon his face slowly rolled down from his bald head while the man’s dark eyes darted from Kelly to the two men that stood behind his chair. The man’s name was Nolan Pyres, a man who had openly confessed his rebel allegiances while drunk at a tavern earlier the other night—hence the reason why Kelly was so eager to talk to him.

“You want me to believe—“ as Kelly touched his open hand to his own chest to signify himself—“that you’re not a rebel—“ using the same hand to identify himself, he pointed at Nolan—“even though there were quite a few eye witnesses that heard you rant for about a solid hour about you being a rebel. So I’m wrong, right?”

Nolan began stuttering over his words, finding himself in a sticky situation—he didn’t want to agree that he in fact said those things while he was drunk, but he also didn’t want to call the Gray Wolf a liar; that might turn out to be a worse fate than being a rebel. As Nolan began to say that he didn’t think Kelly was wrong, he was immediately interrupted by a quick yet casual hand gesture from Kelly, silencing the bulky man.

“No no, if I’m wrong, I need to be corrected. I can’t very well be walking around saying things that aren’t true. I wouldn’t want to make a fool out of myself, now would I?” Nolan quickly shook his head no, utterly agreeing with Kelly’s statement while throwing a bit of sweat off of his head in the process. And then silence ensued. Kelly was staring at Nolan with his piercing gaze as Nolan began to sweat a bit more, as if he were running from something. The two men locked eyes for which felt like an eternity before Kelly leaned forward and quickly reached out with both hands, slapping the top of Nolan’s knees. The man cringed and yelped slightly before realizing that Kelly was grinning a wide grin as he sat back in his slouched position.

“Damnit Nolan, I like you! You know why?”

Kelly begins to stand up from his seat, moving the chair back under the small desk that the candle was sitting on. The two gentlemen behind Kelly never flinch and continue to impose their glare upon Nolan. The overweight man, looking between Kelly and the two men with a bewildered look, begins to feel as though he’s about to end up dead—or worse. Kelly wags a finger at Nolan as he moves to stand in the same area that he was once sitting in.

“Because you are rock solid, you know that? I can tell just from speaking to you that I’m not going to get any information out of you. Tell you what…” Kelly turns his head to make eye contact with one of the men behind him, nodding his head in such a fashion that the man walks past Kelly, stepping behind Nolan and kneeling. The sound of metal against metal can be heard as the man draws out a sharp dagger. As Nolan believes this is the end, he closes his eyes tight and hopes it will be quick…until he hears the rope tearing and being loosened around him.

“…I’m going to let you go. Seems like I’m wasting my time here anyway and I’ve got other places to be.” Nolan stands from his seat as the ropes fall to the ground, the man behind him sheathing his dagger. Nolan, still confused about what the hell just happened, sees Kelly grinning a little and thinks that perhaps he’s playing with him. But Kelly is being extremely genuine with letting him go…assuming that Nolan is small fish and he’ll lead them to other rebels. Nodding again to the man behind Nolan, the dark figure moves to the door and opens it, disappearing into the hallway with the other unnamed man. As Kelly turns to leave, he stops for a moment, turning back to Nolan with a slight smile.

“You have yourself a good evening, Nolan.” Even though his smile said that he could have been sincere, the tone in his voice almost came off as a warning. As Kelly closed the door behind himself, he turned to look at the two men in the hallway who were facing their superior officer. The smile from his face fades and the tone in his voice becomes less friendly.

“Follow him. I want to know where he goes, what he does, who he talks with—if he goes to the bathroom, I want to know how many times he shakes it. Keep your distance and report back what you find.” Both men nod and salute before leaving the tavern. As Kelly exits the establishment, he can find no sign of his men, to which he gives a mental nod of approval. He takes in the night sky, standing on the very edge of the tavern before stepping off and disappearing into the night.
